With the launch of iOS 12, Apple launched a new app called shortcuts. Well, technically, the app is not new. Shortcuts are just a rebranded and more capable version of Workflow.
To add any of the shortcuts below to an iOS device, tap the "Add" link, followed by Add Shortcut. Make sure you look at the shortcut in Mobile Safari, otherwise you may encounter problems.
Alternatively, you can see the steps in each shortcut before you add it to your device to check how it works or make sure it actually does what it promises.
Below are 12 shortcuts that should be useful to almost everyone.
AutoCorrect is fine, but it does not change and modifies any typo we make. You can copy and share a text block from another app to this shortcut, which changes the text to a version that it considers to be correct.
Add control letter to your shortcut application.
Amazon Price History
Next time you're shopping for something you do not need directly, use this shortcut to check an article's price history. The easiest way to use it is to view the item in the Amazon app (or in Safari) and use the Share button to send a link via shortcuts.
Add Amazon price history to your shortcut application.
Do not Disturb Hours
including a new option to set custom DND times. When you run shortcuts you will be prompted to select minutes or hours and specify how much time you want DND to remain active.
Do not Do Not Disturb Timer to Your Shortcuts app.
If you span the battery life, this shortcut that is shared on Reddit will use your current battery percentage, compare it with your predefined settings, and tailor the device performance to pin out the last minutes of your battery .
Add Intelligent Power to your Shortcut.
Installing main applications
One of the biggest chores when you set up an iPhone from the start, looking for the App Store and installing all your main applications. This shortcut, even from Reddit, allows you to enter the name of apps you can not live without. The shortcut then goes through the list, and provides links to each app in the App Store for easy download.
Add Install main application to your shortcut.
Convert Video to GIF
Sometimes an animated image is easier to share or better customized to a quote than a video. This shortcut will present your videos so that you can choose one to edit and become a GIF.
Add Convert video to GIF to your shortcut.
Create a GIF
This shortcut opens the camera application, ready to take a certain number of photos (four by default). After the last photo has been taken, it combines them with an animated image.
Add Scan a GIF to your Shortcut.
A fun and easy way to relive memories is to watch your camera roll. Run this shortcut to view photos saved in your photo album one year earlier. You can customize the shortcut to return further if you want. Be warned, it can be addictive.
Add time machine to your shortcut.
Downloading files on iOS is not the easiest process. With this shortcut, you can share a link to the file for shortcuts. The app then retrieves the file and asks where you want to save it.
Add Download File to Your Shortcut.
Unzip and Save
ZIP files are a problem handling an iOS device because there is no clear way to handle them. Next time you are looking at a ZIP file on your iPhone or iPad, use the sharing sheet to extract and save the content.
Add Unzip and save to your shortcut.
Abbreviated links can be used cruelly to hide the real destination of a URL. If you are suspected that a link (or any other shortened link, for that matter) will take you somewhere, it should not, then use this shortcut to display the expanded URL.
Add Expand URL to your Shortcut.
Backup [sic] Your Shortcuts
I found this on Sharecuts page, and it will surely be helpful if something happens to your shortcuts. By default, iCloud shortcuts sync between your iOS devices, but if anything happens to your database, you're happy to back up your shortcuts.
Add backup shortcuts to your shortcuts app.
Where to find more shortcuts
I found the shortcuts in this post on different websites and services. Some go back to when Workflow was first launched. I did not find out where I found any of the shortcuts, so if you created any of the above, you're enough for me and I give you credit.
It is said that I find new shortcuts, or at least inspiration for my own shortcuts, in the following places:
- Reddit: The subreddrive shortcuts are full of passionate users who constantly create, customize, and discuss shortcuts.
- MacStories: Federico Viticci is probably the most passionate shortcut user, and he shares some rather complex creations on his website. In addition, he actually explains how the shortcut works, often the line by line.
- Sharecuts: A free website hosting cured shortcuts from different users.
- Gallery: There is a gallery section in the shortcut program that lists different shortcuts, some of which I have included below.
