Leap Motion Update improves the design of the North Star Augmented Reality Headset "Next Reality" project



In the current state of the expanded reality space, Leap Motion is the only known name in the DIY AR headset kit with its Project North Star design, which gives the authors the drawings to build their own headsets.

Now, the motion sensor company aims to refine the transparency of the AR. On Thursday, the company released the third version of the Project North Star headset design, giving the headset a more comfortable fit, flexibility in focal length adjustment, and most importantly to me and my visually impaired brothers, the ability to receive prescription glasses.

"Our goal with this release is to make Project North Star more inviting, less chopped together and more reliable," says Florian Maurer, a leading product prototype at Leap Motion, in a blog post.

The latest design gives Project North Star headset a new headdress arrangement. Previously, Leap Motion used a type of welders main dynamics, with an upper band for balance. Now the headgear is higher on the wearer's head, which allows the headset to balance without having to have a top strap. Leap Motion also updated a slider mechanism slider to adjust the headset and prevent it from sliding forward during use.

I To counterbalance the weight of the headset cables, the Leap Motion headset shape adds a stiffness to the structure while lowering its total weight through better 3D print settings.

Finally, the Leap Motion has integrated variable focal lengths in the headset by adding a 75 cm display mount, allowing the viewing content to sit further away more comfortably, along with the standard 25 cm mount.

] "We spent a lot of time deciding where the North Star focal length would be set, and found that it depends on the application" , Maurer said.

While the headset drawings are not mechanically challenged, community support has made the effort a little easier. For example, a professional product prototype has mass-produced the reflective lenses, reducing the cost of the component from $ 200 for a custom pair to $ 40 for a manufactured pair.

"While the bleeding edge of Project North Star development is in our San Francisco technology center, open source work is a constant source of inspiration, says Maurer. "With so many people like independent 3D printing, customizing and sharing our AR headset design, we can't wait to see what you're doing next with Project North Star."
