Despite the cancellation of the Mobile World Congress and several high-profile companies withdrawing from the upcoming Game Developers Conference, Magic Leap is pushing forward to hold its own developer conference.
Instead of organizing a large public conference as it did with the LEAP Conference 2018, Magic Leap will instead host developers who attend their headquarters in Plantation, Florida for a couple of events scheduled May 19-20 and 21- May 22.
The company's development relations team invites 400 developers to participate in the events. Parties interested in participating must apply for treatment via a web form distributed via email invitation, where applicants can choose their desired dates to participate.
Magic Leap promises to notify applicants within 30 days if there is space available for them to participate. The events are free, but selected participants will have to cover their own travel expenses.
"This is the first time we are hosting an event of this scale in our Florida headquarters, and there are many surprises in store," the team stated in the email invitation.
The itinerary for the conferences includes a day of technical talks followed by a day of hands-on workshops, including guidance from leading engineers and designers available and access to new apps and development features. Topics covered at the conferences include technical best practices from the Magic Leap Studios team, success stories from other developers, and monetization of apps. Participants will also have the opportunity to network with others in the community.
By contrast, Magic Leap's inaugural LEAP Con was announced at the end of August 2018 and took place October 9-10 in Los Angeles, so provided that applicants receive confirmation of approval by March 24, participants will have more time to make travel arrangements than LEAP con.
Magic Leap also exceeds the cost of renting out an event space by hosting the event in its own facilities, but also limits the capacity versus a conference center designed to accommodate hundreds, if not thousands, of attendees. Spreading participants over two separate events doubles the company's capacity, but it is unlikely to achieve the scale and spectacle it did with LEAP Con.
But there is an elephant in the room in the form of the coronavirus outbreak, which has forced technology companies to agree their travel plans to protect employees and reduce production. Nevertheless, Magic Leap invites developers to their homes and exposes their employees in the process.
It is unclear if the outbreak will contain then, but a disclaimer in the event of the application relieves Magic Leap of "any direct or indirect losses, damages or damages" from the events, including any costs related to the events that have been postponed or canceled.
So, while the conference is free, attendees should ensure that they are covered for refunds for airline tickets and hotel bookings.
