Do you ever stand on the tasteful, heavily stylized Super Mario 64 advertising art and wonder why the game does not look half as good? The Render96 team is taking part Mario 64 promo art to life with its SM64 SGI mod, which uses new models and structures to nail the aesthetic Silicon Graphics speech.
The SM64 SGI mode is one of many fan projects for the unofficial Super Mario 64 PC port, a version of the game running on Windows without emulation. While the SGI mode is still in its early stages, some players fulfill the fantasies of some players and blur the line between fan mode and restoration games.
But for some, the SGI mode also raises questions about piracy of games. It’s on the heels of Nintendo’s reputation Mario 64 remaster, which can strive for the same Silicon Graphics aesthetic or strive for a more modern look. Which fans would prefer, and would SGI mod the siphon sales away from Nintendo? (The answer is almost certainly “no”, but Nintendo may think differently.)
Future updates for the SGI project will include a playable Luigi, updated scenes and modern lighting. Follow the project’s official Twitter page to keep up with SM64 SGI updates. If you want to try the mode yourself, follow the SGI mod guide.
