ODG Filing Points for Magic Leap Acquisition of auctioned patent assets «Magic Leap :: Next Reality

If you thought the long and unfortunate story of ODG was over, wait, there is one final chapter to tell.

As we reported in January, ODG's remaining patent assets were put into auction, but the buyer was never disclosed. But we now have a pretty good idea of where these ODG patents ended.

In a US Patent and Trademark Office, patent assignments submitted earlier this month, the JGB Collateral (ODG's creditor excluding the patent assets and setting them up for auction), published Mentor Acquisitions One, LLC as a patent asset acquirer. You've never heard of that company, because the Delaware business unit was formed a few months ago on January 1

6. But on further investigation we have discovered that Mentor Acquisitions One has exactly the same address as Magic Leap, which is headquartered at 7500 W. Sunrise Blvd.

Of course, if that address was a dense, high-rise populated part of New York City or San Francisco, it would be fair to consider another The AR-centered company may happen to share that address, perhaps on another floor in a skyscraper. But this is not the case here, as the Magic Leap headquarters is definitely unique (for a technical start-up) – located in a widespread area, largely lacking high-rise or technical startup.

A few years ago, Magic Leap held a special event showing the newly renovated space it had taken over long before it ever showed any Magic Leap One unit.

As you can see from the pictures in the video (below), the former Motorola building is massive and appears to be primarily controlled and occupied by Magic Leap. (Note: The facility has once used an address "8000 W. Sunrise Blvd.", but on Google Maps it is the same location as the current 7500 W. Sunrise Blvd. address.)

We've asked Magic Leap for confirmation or denial of any official affiliation to the Mentor Acquisitions One and, according to this writing, the Magic Leap team did not provide an official response to our request for comment. The leading patent of the lot is called "Image Expansion Optics for Main Computer", which the authors describe as "a main screen display comprising a display panel adapted to generate image content light, a combiner adapted to reflect the image content light against an eye of a user, wherein the combiner transmits scene light from a surrounding environment to the eye of the user and an image expansion optic between the display panel and the combiner. "So while there is a chance as another company called Mentor Acquisition One is king of AR, and only happens housed in the same building as Magic Leap in the unlikely neighborhood and construction of 7500 W. Sunrise Blvd. in Plantage, Florida … it doesn't seem very likely.

The good news is that it appears that ODG's patent was not only snapped up by some greedy patent collector who wants to use the assets in the legal arena. Instead, it looks like ODG's auctioned patent has found a home with a new company that will be able to continue its AR heritage in the future.
