When the OnePlus 7T hit the streets, we called it the best value in smartphones at the time. The company is back with a successor, the OnePlus 8T, and it has a new four-camera system, incredibly fast charging ̵1; and a higher $ 749 price tag.
One of the biggest disappointments for the OnePlus 7T is the lower camera performance, and the company seems to be trying to fix it this time around. OnePlus 8T uses a new four-camera system, somewhat inspired by its older sibling, the OnePlus 8 Pro.
First of all, a 48-megapixel headset is paired with a 16-megapixel ultra-wide lens. To help you get your creativity going, OnePlus also threw in dedicated macro and black and white lenses to round off the four. As with the OnePlus 8 Pro, you’ll find a perforated camera on the front.
However, hardware is only half of the equation, so we reserve the right to assess the phone’s camera skills when we can test. But OnePlus is working to improve its camera software, and now it will automatically detect low light situations and enable NightScape mode for you.
OnePlus 8T also rose from the 90 Hz refresh rate found in the 7T to 120 Hz. OnePlus calls it a 120Hz Fluid AMOLED display and claims that it is the first “flat 120 Hz display ever to receive A + ratings from DisplayMate.”
You also get the latest and greatest software right out of the box. OnePlus 8T is the first global smartphone not manufactured by Google to launch with Android 11. As ever, OnePlus adjusted Android 11 and calls its taste OxygenOS 11
However, one of the distinguishing features is not how you use your phone. This is because OnePlus took its own fast charging system and made it even faster. With its new Warp Charge 65 system, OnePlus says you can get a “full day’s charge” (almost 60% charge) in just 15 minutes. If you need a full phone charge, it takes about 39 minutes.
This despite the fact that it has a battery capacity of 4500 mAh. The company achieved the performance by dividing the battery into two 2250 mAh series-connected batteries and creating a dual battery charging system. Both batteries are charged at the same time. OnePlus says that the battery will last as well, even after 800 charge cycles it will retain 80% of its capacity.
Charging so fast usually causes a lot of extra heat, but OnePlus says it has thought of that, and that your phone should stay at a “comfortable level”. Specifically, OnePlus uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, and it supports 5G and Wi-Fi 6. This makes the phone fairly near future-proof. What you do not get is wireless charging or an IP rating.
Despite all the camera lenses and large battery, the OnePlus is incredibly thin and light. It is only 8.4 millimeters at its thinnest point. And it weighs only 88 grams. By comparison, the OnePlus 8 Pro is 199 grams, which gives the 8T less than half the weight.
You can pre-order the OnePlus 8T today for $ 749, and it’s being released on October 23rd. You can choose between two colors: Aquamarine Green and Lunar Silver.
