Recently, I had the disturbing experience of losing my internet connection completely. No signal – not wireless, not wired, nowhere, anyway. Nothing. Nothing. Bupkis. I checked the wires, connections, restarted the modem and replaced the modem. Nothing worked. It took a day or so for the technician to arrive. In the meantime, I experienced what life without connection meant.
And it was scary.
You can look up all 42 million results for “Digital Divide Seniors 2020” and it does not affect 24 or 48 hours without connection on your own. The statistics do not drive home how difficult it is – especially during this pandemic ̵1; to be an older adult who is not connected online.
Of course, it’s not as dramatic to feel the digital divide as not being connected to the internet at all – sometimes I feel it when I am facing a technical problem that I do not seem to solve..which WiFi releases. Or need an update. Or plug in a program and it will suddenly not work.
