I will be very clear here: I love peanut butter. On sandwiches or biscuits, in oatmeal, on toast, mixed with chocolate, and most other applications suitable for the use of peanut butter. But cereal with peanut butter may be my favorite use of peanut butter. And peanut butter Chex is the best of peanut butter cereal sub-niche.

Here’s what we like

  • Real peanut butter
  • Stays crunchy in milk
  • Good macro balance

And what we do not do

  • More expensive per ounce than other cereals

When I go down the digital aisles of my virtual grocery store (because, you know, pandemic life has food delivery locked up at this point), I spend a ridiculous amount of time in the cereal section. Sometimes I order two, three or even four boxes at a time because I can not decide. But one thing’s for sure: if there’s a grain of peanut butter I’ve not tried, it’s in my cart.

And that’s exactly what happened when I spied peanut butter Chex a few weeks ago. I’m not saying it’s a new grain (I honestly do not know how long it’s been), but I am am says I had not tried it. So it went into the cart. I’m about three drawers deep now, and after taking it over carefully, I think it may be my new favorite cereal.

In any case, Chex is always a winner in my book – it has a good structure, does not get too foggy in milk and is not too sugary. It’s a win-win-win in the complex grain scene. Peanut Butter Chex has a slightly more complex macro balance than other forms of Chex, mostly to “Made with Real Peanut Butter!” aspect pushes the fat to a level higher than other Chex cereals. Here is a quick look at the most important nutrition facts:

  • 180 calories per serving of 41 grams)
  • 4.5 grams of fat (0.5 g saturated)
  • 32 grams of carbohydrates (9 g of sugar)
  • 3 grams of protein

Overall, it’s a pretty decent balance – about 71 percent carbohydrates, 22 percent fat and 7 percent protein. Pair it with milk and the balance changes of course, but you get the idea. At 9 grams, it’s not too sugary compared to most other grains, and I think it’s just sweet enough to measure my sweet tooth.

But the best thing about peanut butter Chex (yes, apart from the fantastic taste profile) is the structure. All Chex is decently crunchy out of the box, but it is also slightly buttery in a way that melts in your mouth. This is even truer with peanut butter Chex, as it is even more buttery than other Chex cereals. It is fantastic.

Peanut butter Chex in a bowl of almond milk
I like it with almond milk. You should test it. Comb

And it remains pretty much so throughout the length of the bowl – unless you are an unusually slow eater (or have 5+ servings at once), the odds are that you will not have to deal with moist grains. I generally pair all cereals with original almond milk, which also adds a little extra sweetness to the dish. It’s pretty excellent.

Right now you are wondering what makes peanut butter Chex better than other peanut butter cereals. This is a question that is a little harder to answer because there are some strong challengers in this area – like Kashi Go Peanut Butter. It really knows the combination of the flavor profile, which really tastes like peanut butter, and the texture. Add to that the fact that it does not get too moist in milk, and that you have a winning combination.

Given that peanut butter cereal is the best cereal, and Peanut Butter Chex is the best peanut butter cereal, this may mean that Peanut Butter Chex is objectively the best grain on earth. Perhaps.
