If you have a Plex Media Server but do not have Plex Pass, we have some good news for you. For the next three months, the company will release its live TV streaming feature for free ̵1; no Plex Pass required. You will still need an antenna and tuner, but you have plenty of time to decide if the feature is worth the price.
You may be wondering why you would even bother to run TV over the air through Plex instead of connecting your antennas directly to your TV. The latter option is undoubtedly cheaper, but it is also a terrible experience. You will not get a guide to quickly see your channels, and you can only watch live shows (besides buying more hardware).
Plex on the other hand provides an interface to navigate your channels and see what is displayed. And more importantly, you record Live TV (provided you have a NAS or hard drive connected to your media server).
With Plex TV, you can watch live programs from any of your devices (not just your TV) and record your DVR and watch it anytime, anywhere. Unfortunately, while Plex does Live TV for free for three months, it does not include DVR functionality.
But for free you can get a good feel for how the service works and how much you would use it. Then you can always raise up to $ 5 per month Plex Pass to download the DVR feature. Or look for a sale on Plex Pass Lifetime Card.
You need some hardware, especially an antenna and a tuner that is compatible with your media streams. To support the effort, Plex offers sales on some packages to get you started.
