Quibi is the latest streaming service launched in an increasingly crowded market – and it may be the strangest yet. Instead of relying on big franchise names or extensive old content directories, such as Disney Plus, Peacock or HBO Max, Quibi is investing heavily in a mobile-first strategy. Its "fast bits" of content can be viewed in 10 minutes or less, and each content can seamlessly transition between separate vertical and landscape versions.
Are you interested in trying it out? Here's everything you need to know about getting started with Quibi:
How much does Quibi cost?
Quibi offers two subscription levels: an option of $ 4.99 per month with "some ads" and a $ 7.99 per month plan without ads.
There is also a limited 90-day free period for anyone who signs up for Quibi.com before the end of April, for those who want to test the service (and check out the content) before they subscribe. In addition, multi-line T-Mobile customers can claim a full year of Quibi for free. (This offer is valid from April 6 to July 7.)
Where is Quibi available?
Initially, Quibi will only be available in the US and Canada, although the company has already said it hopes to expand to other countries in the future.
What units can I use to watch Quibi?
Due to Quibi's mobile-focused nature, the only devices you can use to look at the smartphones. (Both Android and iOS apps are available, though strictly designed for phones, not tablets.)
How long is a Quibi show or movie?
Quibi programs are much shorter than traditional TV or film; each episode (or "chapter" for the split movies) runs between five and ten minutes. It should be a very different experience than regular streaming programs, but Quibi's pitch is that it will still offer quality content that matches big movies and shows, only in a much shorter package.
How does the whole rotating video mode work?
Quibi's biggest feature (or gimmick, depending on who you ask) is its rotation video called "Turnstyle." Instead of committing to landscape video, such as traditional entertainment or vertical video, popularized by social apps like Instagram Stories or TikTok, Quibi promises that all of its content will be designed with both display formats in mind to better suited to mobile users and commuters.
On a practical level, this means that you can effectively stream two copies of each Quibi show simultaneously – one in vertical and one in landscape – theoretically allowing the app to easily switch between the two as you rotate the phone. Quibi says these videos will use up to 20 percent more data than traditional videos in a single direction.
(Remember: if you have rotary lock enabled on your phone, Turnstyle will not work.)
Are there multiple user profiles?
Nix. Quibi's logic here is that the only place you look at is on your phone, which is not the type of shared device (like a TV) that would require profiles. So if you are planning on trying to share a single Quibi account, this is something to keep in mind.
What programs are available on Quibi?
Quibi is launched today, April 6, with approximately 50 programs and films, mixing original screenplays, unscripted reality shows and daily news. The full list of launch shows can be viewed here.
At the launch, there are four original films "Lighthouse", divided into smaller chapters: a remake of The Most Dangerous Game (starring Liam Hemsworth and Christoph Waltz in the lead role), Survive ( with Sophie Turner and Corey Hawkins), Turn (with Will Forte, Kaitlin Olson, Arturo Castro, Eva Longoria and Andy Garcia in the lead role) and As the streetlight continues (without one you probably have heard of.]
There are also 19 unscripted series at launch, including Murder House Flip Chance the Rappers new take on Punk & # 39; d and more. Finally, there are Quibi's "Daily Essential" news shows, which will be updated daily – some at 6:30 am ET, some at 12:00 pm and one party at 6 pm ET – to provide new content during the day.
( disclosure: Vox Media, who owns The Verge has an agreement with Quibi to produce a Polygon Daily Essential, and there have been early conversations about a Verge show .)
More content is expected to be constantly rolling out in the coming days and weeks.
Can I share a Quibi account with friends and family?
Technically yes, but only one of you will be able to watch at a time. Quibi allows only a single simultaneous stream.
Can you watch Quibi programs offline?
Everything on Quibi can be downloaded locally to your device so you can watch when you have no internet connection. Offline content works just as it does when you stream it, with the ability to freely switch between horizontal and vertical content directions.
So how do I register / download Quibi?
Go to Quibi.com to sign up for the 90-day free version and download the Quibi app for Android or iOS to watch.
