Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra deliver everything we have expected from its flagship series. Advanced specifications and features, beautiful screens, fantastic cameras and an even better S Pen provide one of the best smartphones you can get in 2020. Unfortunately, nothing is perfect, and Samsung’s latest also has a fair share of the problems. Here is a summary of some common issues with Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and how to fix them!

Editor’s Note: Not all Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will have these issues. In fact, you are unlikely to come across any of them.


Problem No. 1: Problem with shade of green

The OLED lottery strikes again. Most flagships today come with OLED screens, and a handful of them will inevitably have a color tone problem. The Galaxy Note 20 phones are experiencing the aforementioned problems. Owners have complained that the screens on their devices turn green.

The problem is usually caused by lowering the screen brightness beyond a certain threshold. It is most noticeable when the screen shows something with a gray background. The problem was reported by owners of both the Exynos and Snapdragon variants.

There is usually a software solution for this, and Samsung will hopefully launch it soon. Keeping the brightness at a higher level, for now, must do. If you find a problem with the screen regardless of brightness levels and color modes, your only option is to get a replacement.


Problem # 2: Edge lighting does not work properly

Some users find that the edge lighting function does not work properly. The edge of the screen does not light up as expected when a message arrives even with all settings activated.

Potential solutions:

  • First check that the correct settings are activated. Go to settings, search for Edge lightingand select Select apps. Only the Messages app is selected by default. Go through the list and select the apps you want to be notified about.
  • Some users see this problem because they are using a microSD card from an older device. A folder or directory from the older phone is transferred and conflicts with the settings of the new phone. You need to format the microSD card for this problem to go away, but be sure to save everything from it first.
  • Others see this problem because they have disabled animations in developer options. If you have done so, set the animations to at least 0.5 times.
  • Until a software update is available to fix the problem, a third-party app may help. Try Edge Lighting + in Samsung Good Lock Suite or AODNotify which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

Problem # 3: Random reboot

Some users face a problem with their phones restarting randomly. In some cases, this only seems to happen when the person uses sweeping gestures.

Potential solutions:

  • If sweeping gestures cause the problem, you may need to change what each sweep does. Samsung has an app available that lets you customize and control how sweeping gestures work. Download the One Hand Operation Plus app from the Google Play Store to get started.
  • An app can cause this problem. Start the phone in safe mode (you will find the instructions on how to do this below) and check if the problem persists. If it does not, the cause is a rogue app. Uninstall the latest updated or installed apps and see if the phone works as expected.

Problem No. 4: Ghost vibrations

Some users see ghost vibrations. Buzz is a short burst, similar to what you get when the S Pen is removed. A reboot solves the problem in just a few hours.

Potential solutions:

  • There are a couple of settings you can adjust to see if the problem goes away. Go to Settings> Display> Edge display> Edge panels> Handle settings and turn off Vibrate when you touch the handle.
  • Go to Settings> Sounds & Vibrations> System Sounds / Vibration Control and turn off touch interactions.
  • A fall can also cause the problem. Some users think that the problem disappears when the case is deleted.
  • The biggest culprit, however, may be due to a problem with restoration. Doing a factory reset and setting up the phone manually instead of restoring from a previous account helps solve a lot of issues that users face with Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra.

Problems where the only option is to wait for an update or get a replacement

A hardware problem requires replacement. However, most problems are software related. If a solution is not available, an upcoming software update is likely to address it.

  • “Camera failed” error: This is an error that occurs to some users each time they open the camera app. A software update may resolve this issue. This is probably a hardware problem and since the camera is unusable, it’s better to get a replacement.
  • The phone does not switch to LTE: The phone automatically switches between 3G, 4G LTE and 5G. However, some users find that the network does not switch automatically but seems to disconnect instead. Only a reboot solves the problem.
  • Overheating – There have been some reports of overheating of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra, and this seems to particularly affect the Exynos version.

With the exception of the hard reset, these are the first troubleshooting steps to follow if you encounter any Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra problems and errors.

Soft restart

  • If the screen is responsive:
    • Hold down the power and volume down buttons, then press lightly turn off twice.
    • You can also swipe down to open the message panel, press Force icon next to it settings tooth and pressure turn off.
  • If the screen does not respond:
    • Hold down the power and volume buttons for about 10 seconds.

Hard recovery

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Hold volume up and power buttons depressed.
  • Release both buttons when the green Android logo appears.
  • Press the volume down button to switch the selection to Clear data / factory reset.
  • Press the power button to select Clear data / factory reset.
  • Press the volume down button to switch the selection to Yes delete all user data environment.
  • Press the power button to select Yes delete all user data.
  • When the reset is complete, press the power button to select Restart the system now.

Start in safe mode

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the power switch past Not 20 name displayed on the screen.
  • Once Samsung appears, release the power button and immediately hold down the volume down button.
  • Continue to hold down the volume down button until the phone restarts.
  • Release the volume down button when watching Safe mode at the bottom left of the screen.

Wipe the cache partition

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Hold volume up and power buttons depressed.
  • When the Android logo appears, release the volume up and power button.
  • You will see one Installing system update message anywhere between 30 and 60 seconds.
  • In the System Restore menu options, press the volume down button to toggle the selection to dry cache partition.
  • Press the power button to select dry cache partition.
  • Press the volume down button to switch the selection to yes.
  • Press the power button to select yes.
  • Press the power button to restart the unit once Restart the system now the option is displayed.
