Robocalls, spam calls, scams. But you name them, T-Mobile takes on this class of unwanted incoming calls in the carrier’s latest bid to win the hearts of subscribers – and perhaps point a bit of spit at Verizon and AT & T’s eye. What is Scam Shield and who can get it?
Scam Shield is the name of the entire package of software and services designed to better protect you from robocalls and spam. It involves several elements, including enhanced caller ID and call barring. We get more information about below. It replaces the previous T-Mobile app called Name ID.
Can I start using Scam Shield now?
T-Mobile said you can use Scam Shield on any phone within its wider network, which includes Metro by T-Mobile and now,. But the company also said that Scam Shield will live as a dedicated app on your phone. On July 24th, T-Mobile and Metro customers “can download the Scam Shield app”, said T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert during the taped presentation.
But the same customers can also sign up for a layer of the service, Scam Block, at any time before that by calling # 662 #. Scam Block is designed to prevent unwanted calls from ringing on your phone, but T-Mobile’s fine print allows certain legitimate calls you want can also be blocked..
How about Sprint customers?
T-Mobile is at an early stage of migrating Sprint customers to its network. At the same time, the network makes Sprints Call Screener app, which has similar features, free for users, T-Mobile said.
Is it really free? What if I already paid for it?
If you already paid for T-Mobile or Sprint’s services, the new Scam Shield and Sprint’s existing Call Screener service is now free – you will not be charged in the future.
How do you know who’s actually calling you?
Airlines may have more power over identifying callers than you know. CNET calledand with good reason. It’s an enhanced form of identification that helps sniff out fake or unwanted calls that include scams trying to steal your money. This is not unique to T-Mobile – Verizon has already done so to all customers.
AT&T has also rolled out the protocol, evento verify calls between the two operators’ respective networks.
SHAKEN / STIR (also known as STIR-SHAKEN) is the backbone of T-Mobile’s Scam Shield. The protocol is already there to show you the caller’s real name (as much as possible) even if the person is not in your contact list. For example, the office of your doctor or dentist or another company, such as the local pharmacy.
You also see the words “verified number” with a check mark and phone number, if T-Mobile has it, which indicates that it does not come from a bot or a call center. A tip, “likely fraud,” may also appear on the screen when the phone rings from a suspected source.
What are Scam ID and Scam Block?
These are T-Mobil’s names for the various functions. Scam ID flags the suspicious calls and Scam Block automatically blocks these probable scam calls so you do not see them.
Can I change how my caller ID is displayed to others?
T-Mobile customers: Log in to My T-Mobile and go to Profile > line settings. Then click on Number id and add your company name (in the first name field), legal name or a nickname that is a variation of your legal name. The changes should take effect within 72 hours. Swearing and special characters do not work. The names will be cut short after 15 characters. Call 611 if it does not work.
Sprint Customers: Log in to MySprint and select Profile > settings > Boundaries and permissions > My preferences > Change the name of the caller ID. Enter the legal name or first name and full last name – punctuation, cursing and special characters are not allowed.
How do you get a free second phone number?
T-Mobile Proxy is the operator’s name for a second number that you can give to companies and individuals that you do not want access to your primary phone number. These calls, texts and voice messages are removed from your main number so that they do not harm you and you can manage them from the Digits app. The whole family can use the proxy number.
The fine print: Magenta, Magenta for Business and Essentials plans get a free proxy number per account. T-Mobile may cancel it “for non-use.” Calls to 911 may be “restricted.”
How many times can you change this number?
Each account is allowed one number change per year.
What happens if I have a landline?
T-Mobile also announced free fraud blocking for Line Link, the carrier’s property compensation.
What did T-Mobile say about the dark web?
This one is a little tricky. Under the window from July 24 to August 31, you can sign up for 12 months of free McAfee identity theft protection. It will warn you about yoursand agents will help you recover and restore your identity, including if you lose your wallet and sensitive documents.
The fine print: Only one per line, you have to redeem your code in a “fast” way and not all service plans can be qualified.
