See nearby brand recommendations via curated city guides in iOS 14’s Apple Maps «iOS & iPhone :: Gadget Hacks

When you’re in a new city or even your own area you may not know where the best places to visit are. The number of parks, restaurants, malls and other attractions can be overwhelming, so how can you narrow down your choices? The new iOS 14 update has introduced curated city guides in Apple Maps, created by trusted brands to help you find great places to explore.

City guides have trails, outdoor activities, restaurants, public art, parks and more, and you can save your favorite guides and update them automatically as more places are added. “Collections”, which has been redirected to “Guides”

;, have been in Maps since iOS 13, but they have only ever been generated by users. Now we have guides made by brands like Lonely Planet and Love, which are cornerstones of the travel industry.

Guides are currently only available in San Francisco – the norm for new Apple features – but will soon be spread to other major cities around the world, such as Los Angeles, New York, London and Paris. If you need recommendations for places to visit and run iOS 14 on your iPhone, curated guides can be your new favorite travel companion. See all you can do with them below.

Find a curated city guide in maps

To find available guides for a city, either tap on the city name on the map (which can only be done for larger cities that offer Flyover) or select it from a search you entered. We’ll be showing off San Francisco because it’s the only city available right now, but as the feature progresses, more cities will be added.

Once you have selected the city name, you should see available guides under the “Directions” button (and the “Flyover” button for cities where Flyover is offered). They will be in [City Name] guides, section. Pull up the information card to get a better picture of listed lists of lists.

To view the featured guides, swipe left in the list to scroll through them. If nothing there interests you, you can press “See more” to see all available guides for the city in a list view. In San Francisco, at the time of writing, there were 23 guides available.

Another way to find guides is by searching for and selecting a site that interests you. During a text search, if the site is listed in a guide, it will display the guide under its name in the results. If it is in multiple guides, it will say “Viewed in [#] Guides “.

On the information card for that place, it shows you all the guides that it is in, if any. From there, you can choose one to see like-minded places to visit.

Show a curated city guide in maps

Once you have found a guide that sounds interesting, click on it, and each place in the guide will appear on the map while the guide itself shrinks to a minimized view. Drag up the map to expand the guide and see a short description of it, who compiled it and how many places are included. If it was recently updated, it would say when as well.

During the introduction, you will see details for each location, such as a brief description, the distance from your current location, the cost (if any) and the hours (if any).

You can either scroll through the guide and tap a place or tap a cursor on the map to show the details of the specific place on the map, which you can swipe up to see in its entirety. You see the general information for a place, such as an address, phone number, distance from your place, hours, website, reviews, Wikipedia information and more, if available. And you can hit “Directions” to navigate there from your current location. You can also see all the guides that the website contains.

If you hold down a cursor, you can bring up a quick action menu to quickly get directions, call the location, open their Safari website, or share the location, if any of it is available.

If you see a placemark with a number on the map, it indicates several places close to each other. Click on it and a list of the total locations will be displayed on the card. Drag up on the map to see all locations and more information. You can also see if it is in other guides, with quick access to them.

Find out more about a place in a curated guide

Some brands will provide more information about the site on their site, but not all. If there is more information on the web, there will be a “Find out more” or “Read the full description” in the wizard, which opens the Safari web page. Below you can see a link to The Infatuation’s website under a publicist from San Francisco “The SF Late Night Delivery Guide.”

Find more curated guides from a specific brand

If there is a guide you like, you can scroll to the bottom of it to see the curator and how many other guides it has cured. Click on the brand (in my example it is Lonely Planet) and you will see a list of all the guides they have created. From here, you can download the company’s iOS app, view the Safari website, and share its list of guides.

Note: Because SF is the only city currently supported, it is not known if you see all the brand guides for all cities or just the current city you are looking at.

Save curated guides for future reference

If you are in a curated city guide that you like, you can always add it to your list of personal guides for later reference. When you are in a curated guide, just click on “Save guide” at the top, and it will be saved in your guide list, which contains all the custom collections you have made. To find it later, go back to the map’s website, swipe up on the map and then look for My guides section. Click “See All” if you do not see it immediately.

Save a place in a personal guide from a curated guide

You may like a guide but may only be interested in one place. Instead of saving the wizard, you can add a curated location to a new or existing wizard. In a curated guide, click the plus sign button to the left of the place name. You then have the opportunity to save the place in one of your personal guides (formerly called “collections”). Either select an existing one or create a new guide.
