Sometimes it’s a real struggle to fall asleep. Whether you have difficulty unwinding after a stressful day, or your mind does not stop competing over tomorrow̵7;s to-do list, a connection between a tired body and a wire connection can keep someone up at night. But Sleepcasts might just help.
Welcome to Quick Tips, a series where we offer tips and tricks that are not necessarily new but that may have gone under the radar or are otherwise not well known.
Sleepcasts are mainly sleep podcasts or audio content that are designed to calm your mind at night so that it can be disconnected from the day’s worries and (finally) fall asleep. The feature is one of many offered by Headspace, an online care company that focuses on meditation. The app is full of tools to help you meditate, reduce stress and anxiety, be more attentive and – you guessed it – fall asleep at night.
The sound consists of soft sounds and a simple story told with a low soothing voice, like a bedtime story. Each usually lasts anywhere from 45-55 minutes and consists of several sections such as breathing techniques, visualizations, meditation exercises and the told story of a dreamy landscape with a calm, yet immersive soundtrack behind it. The guided tour is only interesting enough to focus your mind (read: make it forget everything else), but not enough to keep you awake.
And what’s really cool about Sleepcasts? Headspace mixes the order daily so there is no beginning, middle or end. This prevents you from memorizing the story (which would engage you, rather than relaxing it), and it means you can stop and pick up anywhere without missing a beat. All you have to do is lie down and enjoy a peaceful story. Many people find that this type of content, rather than white noise, contributes more to falling asleep quickly and falling asleep.
Some storytelling options include Indigo Gallery, which offers a space for busy minds to rest; Night city where you can escape your stress in a sleepy city; and Desert campfire, which offers comfort for worrying minds.
Sleepcasts are a good tool that makes it a little easier to find more balance and peace every day and every night. Sleepcasts are an extension of the helpful articles, meditations and stories that Headspace offers to help you reduce and deal with all kinds of problems caused by stress or lack of focus. These problems can, if left unchecked, disrupt many aspects of your life including your sleep, which can cause other disturbances in a vicious circle. Sleepcasts help you create a healthy bedtime routine, which will eventually become a habit that trains your brain to release anxiety as the night approaches and falls asleep peacefully.
Sleepcasts (a la Headspace) offer a free trial period for the first two weeks, then you can continue with a monthly or annual subscription. Pricing starts at $ 5.83 per month and gives you access to the entire app, not just sleep-centric content. Headspace also offers student and family prizes, which is good if your spouse, children or parents also have trouble falling asleep.
