Almost two years after the launch of Switch, Smash Bros. Ultimate still adds new warriors regularly. Next up on the massive list (number 77, if you count) is Steve from the smash-hit construction game Minecraft. Steve, along with skins for Alex, a zombie and Enderman (an extra spooky zombie) comes as DLC.
The ultra ̵1; blocking characters are replicated in Smash Bros, with features that mimic their signature basic animations and voxel tools and weapons. There will also be one Minecraft-themed battle steps, with varying terrain and destructible elements.
It is difficult to say who benefits most from this partnership. While Nintendo has more than happily brought in characters from other companies’ lists, such as Pac-Man, Sonic, Hero from Drank warriorsand Bayonetta, Minecraft is actually a much bigger game than Smash Bros. in terms of sales. It has sold 200 million copies since the first edition in 2011, more than twice as much as each Smash Bros. the game combined.
The Minecraft characters is technically the second crossover between Nintendo and Microsoft, after Banjo and Kazooie. Both Minecraft developer Mojang and Banjo-Kazooie owner Sällsynta is a subsidiary of Microsoft. It is also interesting to note that Minecraft, which uses a simple visual style and animation that deliberately evokes nostalgic graphics, is now presented in a fight that is basically a giant nostalgia party.
The Minecraft characters are part of Fighter Pass Volume 2, a $ 30 surcharge for the base game. They will also be available as a standalone option for $ 6. They should go live in the game in a few weeks.
