Roku Streambar connected to TV
Justin Duino

Roku is the most popular streaming platform in the US and other markets because the interface is dead easy to use and the relatively low cost of hardware makes the platform accessible to people with all budgets. With Streambar, Roku now has the de facto option for those who want to enhance their streaming video and audio experience with a single device.

Here’s what we like

  • All in one package
  • The sound quality is much better than your TV
  • Easy to install and use

And what we do not do

  • Does not come with an improved voice remote control
  • Good in every room, but best in small bedrooms

Everything you need is in the box

Before we dig into Roku Streambar, we should talk about why you even want an all-in-one product. If you’ve upgraded your TV in recent years, it’s probably relatively thin, has a 4K resolution and is packed to the brim with features like HDR, Dolby Vision and more.

But if you did not pay extra for a package that included audio equipment, you have probably noticed that the built-in speakers are weak and possibly even muted because they do not point at you while watching TV.

Enter the Roku Streambar. Connect the 14-inch audio bar to the HDMI ARC port on your TV and you’re done. With one device, you get a Roku that can stream 4K HDR movies and TV programs and a soundbar with dual forward-facing speakers and dual side speakers.

What’s even better is that you do not have to worry about buying any extra cables or accessories to get started. You will find an HDMI cable and an optical cable in the box next to Streambar. The HDMI cable should be the only one needed because your TV’s ARC port handles video and audio, but the optical cable is provided if your TV does not support ARC or that port is picked up by another device.

Unfortunately, like other new audio fields and audio systems, you will not find HDMI in ports on the back of the Streambar. The lack of ports is not a big deal if Streambar is the only device connected to your TV, but if you have other devices, you need to trust the rest of the HDMI card slots on your TV and hope that it distributes the audio signal properly to the soundbar.

Don’t expect the Roku Ultra Performance, but it’s okay

It’s easy to compare the Roku Streambar with the updated Roku Ultra digital box. Both units are released during the same time period and have similar price tags. But even though Streambar costs $ 30 more, you’ll find less powerful internals and performance compared to Ultra.

Roku does not advertise exact processors in its streaming devices, but the company told me that it in Streambar is less powerful than Ultra. Although I never encountered any performance issues or delays when opening apps, Ultra can stream Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos content. Streambar, by comparison, is “limited” to Dolby Audio on top of 4K and HDR.

The control unit that comes with the Streambar is Roku’s standard voice remote control. Even if you’re still as capable as Ultra, you can not connect headphones to the remote control and listen privately to what’s on your TV.

Being a soundbar, who wants a remote control with headphone jack can sound backwards. If you pay a premium for speakers, why would you want to use earphones? I thought my guest bedroom and office were ideal places for Streambar. In both rooms there are times that I want to watch TV without irritating or waking my significant other.

You can always buy the enhanced voice remote control from Roku if you want extra functionality.

Soundbar itself offers a solid listening experience. Dialogue and music (both in the background of videos and while paired to a smartphone via Bluetooth) are clear and loud. While it’s good for general entertainment, I would not rely on it for an immersive experience.

If you want to increase the volume from the Streambar, you can pair the soundbar with Roku wireless speakers and subwoofer. Unfortunately, that would mean turning your budget soundbar into a $ 460 sound system.

The best all-in-one streaming device

You want a streaming device that only works, whether it’s a device from Roku, Google or a number of other companies. Streambar offers the best of any major streaming platform (if you do not want to play) and adds speakers that sound on par with any budget-friendly soundbar.

Don’t expect to compare Streambar with expensive speakers, but Roku did a fantastic job of tuning the four speakers into the soundbar to provide a pleasant listening experience. While it may not fill a large living room, Streambar is more than enough for a bedroom or a small media room.
