Apple announced its latest software updates last month at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference and gave a sneak peek at the new features coming to their Apple Watch models. The update is expected this autumn and includes a new number of clock surfaces, new training options and natural sleep tracking – the last one has been very expected during many years.

Unfortunately, these features will only be compatible with the Apple Watch Series 3 ($ 199 at Apple) or later, and some features are exclusive to the 5 Series. Here is a breakdown of ten new Apple Watch features announced at WWDC 2020.

Native sleep tracking is finally coming

The wait is over. Apple Watch users will finally be able to carry their watch to bed and track their sleep without having to download a third-party app. WatchOS 7 also helps users sleep in time by providing a way to relax from the day with a soothing bedtime. Once in bed, the Apple Watch uses its motion and heart rate sensors to determine when you have turned off and off all notifications. In the morning, you can look back at your sleep cycle to see if you woke up in the middle of the night and watch your progress over time.

To track sleep, the Apple Watch must have at least 30 percent charge, and it will need to be charged when you wake up. When the Apple Watch is fully charged, you will receive a message on your phone that it is ready to go.

Training and ‘new’ fitness app

Maps now have directions for cycling.

Apple

That the Zumba class can show that you have burned more calories in WatchOS 7. Apple has added dance, core training, functional strength and cooling to its list of training options on Watch. As such, Watch’s algorithm is specifically tuned for these exercises and calorie tracking is more accurate.

Cyclists will also get a new navigation feature in Apple Maps that allows them to select routes based on time to destination, total distance or number of hills.

The activity app, which contains activity rings and the summary of your day, has been redirected in WatchOS 7. It will be called the Fitness app on both Apple Watch and iPhone. Although the app remains very similar to the Watch, it has got a slightly new design on the iPhone. It has a more comprehensive summary page and a more intuitive way to find your statistics at a glance.

WatchOS 7 keeps you honest about hand washing

You know that we live through some interesting times when hand washing gets almost as much air time as sleep tracking in the basic tone. Apple Watch will use motion sensors and a microphone to calculate when you wash your hands and make sure you do it right. Once it has been determined that you are at the sink, it will start a 20-second countdown, which is the optimal duration based on the CDC guidelines. It may even remind you to do so as soon as you step into your house.

Other health features

WatchOS 7 takes the Noise app a step further by extending noise alerts to headphone levels. Apple Watch already monitors ambient noise and alerts users when it reaches levels that may affect hearing loss. But now it will do the same thing when you listen to audio through your headphones from either your iPhone, iPod or Apple Watch. You will receive a warning if you have exceeded the recommended volume or listening time given by the World Health Organization.

There is also a new heath value that can help users get a sense of their mobility and cardiovascular capacity. Advanced age or injuries can affect people’s balance and general ability to move safely and efficiently. Apple Watch uses its motion sensors (as well as the motion sensors on the iPhone) to get an idea of what it looks like over time, similar to a “6-minute walking test” that you would normally get in a lab. Sharing this information with a physician can help detect mobility problems before they affect your health.

Share and discover the new watch

Apple still does not allow third-party clock, but there will be more ways to do it customize your Apple Watch by customizing existing templates or adding multiple complications from the same app. Watch wearers can also share the watch’s faces with each other via text, email or social media or discover other looks that are curated by specific companies.

Apple Watch also has a new Chronograph Pro option, which has an analog-style tachometer that measures speed and distance, and has an extra large text option and new photo filters. And you’ll be able to add new complications for Apple’s camera, remote control, sleep and Shortcuts Apps.

Car key function turns your watch into a key fob

With the updates, your Apple Watch can become a key fob for your car. You will not be able to issue car key permits as on the iPhone, but you will be able to accept them if they are shared with you via the Wallet app. The car key feature will only be available on the Apple Watch Series 5 or later (provided we get one Series 6 in the fall), and will only be compatible with select BMW models until further notice.

Other iOS features

  • Apple Watch has inline answers for the Message app
  • Siri can read back your texts when connected to headphones
  • Apple Watch will have a translation app that allows users to translate entire conversations.
