This guide is a list of meditation, mindfulness and breathing programs that claim some of the best scores on iTunes and Google Play. No one falls under four stars, and everyone boasts gushing reviews from happy customers.

In addition to grades and favorable reviews, I was looking for apps that offer more than just audio meditations. In this list you will find options for customizable meditations, non-word background music, dedication, inspirational push messages and complementary podcasts.

Finally, almost every app on this list was developed by a person or company with strong links to meditation and mindfulness ̵

Stop, Breathe & Think calls itself the emotional wellness platform for the "under 25" generation. The app offers meditations designed to help teenagers and young adults deal with tough feelings like depression and anxiety. In addition to meditations, you can engage in short activities that allow you to check in with yourself, ask questions and really notice how you feel.

With the premium subscription, you get access to more meditation, music and activities.

As you can collect from their name, The Breathing App focuses only on breathing and the physiological benefits you get from slowing your breath: increased lung function, reduced stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and improved emotional balance, just to name a few. .

The app can only change two settings. 10% happier is a mindfulness app for meditation skeptics and fidgety people. The app offers a nonsense, relatable way for beginners to dip the toe in meditation, and it is more focused on performance improvement than soul searching. It is good for people with high pressure jobs and busy lives.

The free trial period includes a basic one-week introduction to meditation and mindfulness, but after that the free offerings are sparse. You can always listen to the free 10% happier podcast.

I included this app because it is even more comfortable than iPhone or Android apps too busy – saw people. Andas is the Mindfulness app for Apple Watch that allows you to squeeze in a quick meditation without ever pulling out your phone.

With one of three presets – classic, focused or calm – you breathe in the rhythm with the animation on the screen. If you answer a call or text or move too much during the training, your watch will not give you credit for that session.

Breathe is a built-in app on Apple Watch Series 4, so it doesn't appear in the iTunes Store. Breathing is not compatible with Android devices.

Cost: Free trial, $ 12.99 per month, $ 95 per year or $ 400 lifetime subscription.

A "best meditation app" list would not be complete without the Headspace, Mindfulness app developed by sports scientist-turned Buddhist monk Andy Puddicombe. Originally an event company, Headspace now includes guided meditations, animations, articles and videos to help beginners as well as experts in their meditation practices.

You can test Headspace with free basics course, which offers 10 meditations to teach the basics of meditation and get you in a rhythm. You can also try a free session from many of the app's collections of meditations.
