HEPA vs. PECO filter: What is the difference?

Most of us are probably familiar with HEPA or highly efficient particulate filters. A majority of air purifiers have it and some vacuum cleaners as well. These mechanical air filters force air through a very fine mesh fabric to catch pollutants that mix in the air. To be considered a HEPA filter, it must remove up to 99.97% of the particles as little as 0.3 microns from the air. The great thing about HEPA filters is that they become more efficient when the air becomes dirtier, while electrostatically charged air filters require more frequent replacements.

PECO or photoelectrochemical oxidation technology, on the other hand, is a type of filter that does not give allergens, bacteria or viruses a chance to flourish. Instead of capturing these toxins, PECO uses light to spark a nano-coated filter and achieve a catalytic oxidation reaction. Basically, organic substances are divided into small harmless molecules. Because PECO filters do not collect particles, it can clear contaminants that are approximately 1000 times smaller than HEPA filters can. It cleans and disinfects the air without you having to throw anything away and risk exposure to the handful of dirt.

How to choose an air purifier

There are many factors to consider when choosing an air purifier. Apart from the brand, start with the size of the room where you are going to use the device. You can detect some models with the AHAM Verifide seal. The sale means that the cleaner has been tested independently and has passed the quality that the manufacturer of household appliances adds. You can also compare CADR (clean air delivery rate) which refers to the volume of clean air that an air purifier can produce with the highest speed setting in relation to the cubic volume of the room. The higher the CADR, the faster and more efficient the air purifier.

Since air purifiers are usually run all day, the energy cost is calculated. Look for the Energy Star logo, which guarantees that the air purifier is at least 40% more energy efficient than regular models. You must state how much you are willing to spend on replacement filters or choose to get one with washable filters. Some air purifiers are too noisy, so check for quiet operation or have night shifts.

There are air purifiers with special filters that are designed to absorb certain contaminants. HEPA filters are common for handling allergens, dander spots, hair, dust mites and pollen, while devices with an active carbon filter are recommended to remove odors. There are also models that are designed for smoke or for people with multiple chemical sensitivities.

While most air purifiers promise ease of use, some devices come up in the ante with built-in smart features. Ordinary air purifiers work in one or two ways. Those with continuous air filtration work much like a room fan where you press the desired speed and it moves air consistently at that speed. Others have automatic air filtration modes that detect pollutants with air quality sensors and adjust themselves to remove them from the air. Smart air purifiers allow you to track and control the quality of the air. You can also learn exactly the type of microorganisms that have infiltrated your home or office. Some smart air purifiers work in combination with smart home systems and devices, such as those compatible with Amazon Alexa.

The best air purifier is simply one that best suits your needs. Additional functions such as noise, portability, touch programs with LED indicators, timer, remote control or smart functions are secondary to room size and suitable filtration system. Air purifiers can improve indoor air quality by eliminating allergens floating in the air. Heavier particles that fall to the ground can be captured more quickly in time.
