1; today you will find lots of topical topics related to the present as fact checks on political statements, information on cure medicine and in-depth look at topics ripped directly from the headlines.

When Snopes began back in 1995, however, they had a fertile order book – all history really – to dig in. Among all the topics they would eventually come around to address, whether or not the moon landing was forged, or whether Napoleon actually being super short, they began with a persistent odd rumor: that Charles Manson, the notorious criminal and cult leader, had tried for The Monkees .

The claim is false, but not entirely without merit. Unlike many rumors and claims that even lack the most remote ground in reality, the Manson-Monkees link has at least one ghost of probability hanging about it. While Manson never participated in the said audition, he hung around with people in the California music scene at the time, tried for Byrds, and one of his musical compositions even ended up as a Beach Boys b-side single .
