How will the IRS contact you about the payment?

The IRS will send letters – as it calls IRS 1444-A – around September 24 to those who may be eligible. The agency said the letter will be sent from an IRS address. You can see a copy of the letter here (PDF) in English and Spanish.

How do you claim your incentive payment?

If you did not have to file a federal tax return, the letter encourages you to use the IRS ‘non-filing tool, where you can provide certain information to claim your payment.

If you had to file your federal taxes but did not do so, the letter will direct you to electronically register your 2019 tax return immediately and then use the IRS’s “Get My Payment” to check the status of your payment.

The IRS warns that receiving a letter does not guarantee that you are entitled to a payment.
