    In 2002, the Nintendo WaveBird controller for GameCube released. It was the first really big wireless controller: functionally identical to the standard vibration (sans vibration), with super fast performance and long battery life. Now you can relive the joy of it on Switch.

    Each major home console since, from Nintendo and its competitors, has included built-in wireless control function. It is now the standard: wired pads are relegated to barges and some models made for dead purists who are afraid of a millisecond or two of wireless latency.

    So it's strange that with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the power switch coming out in a few days and Smash fans desperate to use the familiar and comfortable GameCube control, Nintendo has not made any WaveBird controls for over fifteen years.

    You can play Smash with a wired GameCube controller – you're actually running more or less continuously all the time – but if you want the threadless experience, you'll need to track an old original WaveBird. And it will not work you well if you want to play other Switch games on it.

     Nintendo, Powera, Switch, Nintendo Switch, Gamecube, Gamecube Controller, Smash, Smash Bros, [19659024] PowerA, MOGA Mobile Controller manufacturer and various other gaming accessories, are here to fill that gap. The company's new Wireless GameCube Controller has the classic layout of Smash players longing for, with the Bluetooth connection and additional face buttons that Switch needs. It also has a second "Z" button (called L1 on more conventional layouts) and a "clickable" dumpster and C-stick that covers all of the same control inputs as Switch's Joy-Con and Pro controllers. It's WaveBird that comes back to life, and it will work with all your other Switch games as well.

    In eager expectations of Smash Bros. Ultimate I took up the PowerA control at GameStop. You may need to do something like it: it is sold online, and the scalpers offer it to ridiculous marks for the price of $ 50. (Seriously. At Amazon, it's currently 1-2 months backorder.) See, Nintendo? There is a market for this matter!

    A faithful recreation

    The PowerA control monitors the GameCube layout almost exactly. This is not the typical third-party impression, the multi-year "little brother's controller" bought for half the price of the Nintendo option. You can tell me this was an official Nintendo product, and I would be willing to believe it.

    GameCube's clear A-focused primary clusters, bumpy and tight C-stick and cushy L and R buttons are all present and reported. The shape and feel of the controller match the original GameCube cube exactly: even the colors (Black, Purple, WaveBird Gray and Gold and Silver GameStop Exclusive) belong to the original artwork.

    The only obvious difference is that instead of a single Start button, this revived version of Switchens +, -, Home and "Capture", the better is to navigate in the console's main menu. There are also a few creature comforts. The D-pad has been oversized by a few millimeters, solving one of the few problems with GameCube's layout (when Nintendo re-used the plastic shapes from the Game Boy D pad) and the "Z" button on the right side has been mirrored to the left, giving PowerA- check the current default four-axis buttons in total.

    Unlike the original GameCube pen, the thumb and the C-pin can be pushed inwards, just like any modern controller's thumbs. These changes cover all the standard controls for today's console play.

    There are some things that eliminate the PowerA control. Unlike all Nintendo Switch wireless controllers, the batteries are not rechargeable, so you get stuck in replacing AA as the old WaveBird.

    The Wireless GameCube cushion has a motion sensor inside for the few games that take advantage of it, but unlike Joy-Cons and Pro Controller, there is no NFC chip to read Amiibo and other toy data. It's an acceptable omission: it's a rare part of interaction that will already be covered by the Joy-Con controls that came with your first Switch purchase.

    A more disturbing cost-saving measure is disruption or lack of it. The PowerA control unit has no vibration engine at all and shields a subtle but important part of the player's interaction. It was true that the original WaveBird also did not have rumble … but it was 2002. When all the phones on the planet have at least one weak vibration engine, not to mention the teeny-small individual Joy-Con controllers, it suddenly loses the feedback Feels beautiful crushing. It is easily the biggest disadvantage of an otherwise impressive design.

    Works well with some games …

    It was very fun to use the PowerA GameCube controller. The only differences I could feel between the new regulator and the older design are a small extra "feather" in the thumb and shoulder buttons … which may just be because the springs are new and my 17 year old memory is not.

    Player with PowerA Controller felt identical to playing my old GameCube game with WaveBird. Which is pretty much what I thought of. Mario Kart 8 was a particularly fun experience: it has a fairly simple control layout that works incredibly well with the original GameCube design. A minute or two was all I needed to adjust from the layout of the Pro Controller, my go-to switch option.

    For something a bit more challenging, I switched to Dead Cells ]. If you're not familiar with the game, it's basically a 2D Dark Souls, and its punishing difficulty requires precision timing and use of all facial and shoulder buttons. It was a bit more difficult.

    The long throw in GameCube's shoulder buttons meant that I was a bit slower with secondary skills, and the altered A-focused resolution of the resolution button resulted in premature deaths. But Dead Cells holds their players and allows for complete control: after a little tweaking, I found a modified layout that was comfortable. Within 20 minutes I was back to kill undead monsters with ruthless efficiency.

    … And not with others

    Lastly, I tried The legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild . This was the big test because it's a complete 3D game with all the complex control problems of modern sandboxes. And so it's also where GameCube controller layout begins to show its age.

    Nintendo, power switch An oversized primary page button for the most common actions, surrounded by easy-to-read secondary buttons. But it works best when the games are designed with this control layout in mind. The Oversized One Button Must Be Mario's Jump, or the Basic Attack / Download in Smash Bros . The secondary B button is easily placed, because that's why it's Link's sword slash in GameCube Wind Waker. But on the switch with Breath of the Wild the Link's sword line moves to the Y button – about the same physical location as the GameCube B button, but another link.

    This translates new Zelda control schedule to the old layout, the basic attack on the top of the control cluster instead of something to the side. So the button you use most often is one of the most difficult to reach with your thumb. And since Breath of the Wild is about moving around the open world than using storage puzzles, the primary "interaction" button, A, is almost never used in combat heat. So the "key" button, more or less the guiding principle from the design of the controller, is just shy for useless for this modern game. The 3D camera, which is standard for the "C" bar on the PowerA controller, is also inevitably crushed thanks to its stiffer spring and smaller nubs on the GameCube design.

    Breath of the Wild offers almost no control adjustments. And to be fair they do not really need them: Nintendo did not design the game for a control layout from two decades ago. However, if you hope to use the GameCube layout for games that were never made with your intentional design in mind, you will solve these issues on a regular basis. There is something to be aware of if you plan to invest triple numbers in multiple controls.

    Ideal for Emulation

    I do not have Smash Bros. Ultimate but that's of course, the real reason I want this check – and probably will be the same for most people looking for it. So to give it a real trial for this review, I connected the PowerA control to my computer and used it in the GameCube / Wii emulator, Dolphin. Startup Smash Bros. Melee or Brawl I was transported back to my WaveBird's celebrations. In addition to the aforementioned lack of disruption, it is a perfect replication of the classic Smash feeling.

    So it is said, this check will work well if you specifically want to emulate GameCube or Wii- games, PCs or similar platforms. The Bluetooth connection is fast and stable, and after checking the manual for the basic connection process, I had no further problems. It's also easy to use it for older games in Steam, with its excellent support for steering feature customization.

    A good pick for a specific player

    Are you buying this wireless GameCube control? If you insist on the classic GameCube layout for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and you want the convenience of wireless, and you're okay with lack of messaging, yes. The specific niche will be extremely well-served by this case, even with its battery and vibration defects. It's as if WaveBird fell in a time machine.

    Emulation fans looking for a simple Bluetooth GameCube controller will also be happy for one or two of these pads. But if you want both GameCube controls for Smash and the vibration – quite a bit of the specific game, you'll need to go with Nintendo's cordless controller and adapter combination bomb. And if you want a wireless controller that also works well with all modern Switch games, the precious, but excellent Switch Pro control is a better bet.

    Even if you're in the very specific niche of an ideal user, do not hurry to pay more than the retail price for this case-resist the desire to enrich scalpers who sell the wireless GameCube control too much, much more than what it's worth it.
