Brands often rely on a "gaming" label on products to pay extra for their assumed performance benefits. Skepticism aside, some player-focused products can deliver a truly superior experience that is worth paying for. Players are also not the only ones who can benefit.

Monitors High-Refresh Rate

An AOC 144 Hz Monitor-High-Refresh-Rate Monitor.

A monitor's refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is the number of times the screen is updated every second. A 60 Hz screen is updated 60 times per second and outputs 60 frames per second (fps). If your computer is higher than 60 fps, you will not benefit from this because the monitor cannot keep up.

This does not mean that there are no benefits to playing at higher refresh rates than those supported by your monitor (reduced input delay is large). However, it is one of the main reasons why many players turn to screens with high updating. Generally, screens with high updating speed start at 144 Hz and go all the way up to 240 Hz.

With the right hardware running the monitor, playing at 144 Hz or better is noticeably smoother than a basic 60 Hz experience. Many professional eSports players use monitors with a high refresh rate to reduce the input delay and improve response times.

A higher refresh rate improves gaming, but it also improves the entire computer experience. It makes your computer do everything greasy. From dragging your cursor over a window to browsing a website, who wouldn't prefer a hardware configuration that just feels better?

If you want to add some sparkle to your desktop, high-update screens are no longer prohibitively expensive or limited to the disappointment of twisted nematic (TN) panels. Now you can buy IPS panels with excellent contrast ratio that get response times of one millisecond at 144 Hz.

It is not just computer screens that include high refresh rates either. Many Android phones now offer increased refresh rates of 90 Hz or better, for the delicate edge that consumers love. Apple had the same idea in 2017, when it introduced 120 Hz screens in the 10.5 and 12.9-inch iPad pros.

Das Keyboard

Whether you are a receptionist, coder or just spend too much time on Slack, your keyboard can make your job much more enjoyable. Buying an exorbitantly priced, ergonomic keyboard, but a mechanical one may be worth the investment.

While inexpensive keyboards usually have a rubber diaphragm with a simple key mechanism above, the mechanical type has individual switches for each key, the benefits of which are huge. provides a more consistent writing experience that is deeply linked to the type of switches used for the keys.

These switches are manufactured to a higher standard than non-mechanical varieties, carries that they will last longer. Since each button has its own switch, you can change the switches when they are switched relatively cheaply – and that goes for the buttons too. They are also very easy to clean, as they easily disassemble with a key remover.

So what about the writing experience? It depends on what you expect from your keyboard. The switches you select determine the keyboard properties. Some are loud and "clickable", while others are quiet and subdued for coding or typing at speed.

Different switches have different intended uses. Cherry MX is the world's most famous manufacturer of mechanical keyboard switches. The company's red switches offer linear shift mechanics without audible clicking. The blue switches have audible click and tactile switching properties.

Different manufacturers (like Razer) categorize their switches in different ways, but you cannot choose based on color alone. The best way to determine which is the right mechanical keyboard for you is to spend some time using one. Go to a store or take advantage of a free offer from an online store.

You don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on a mechanical keyboard. Even one that costs under $ 40 will still provide a better typing experience than a comparable membrane keyboard. It will probably last much longer too.

Gaming Chairs

Three DXRacer Racing Series PRO gaming chairs.

Bad attitude can affect your life both in the short and long term. While standing desks would save us all from the risks of a sedentary lifestyle, most people still prefer to sit while they work. If you are one of them, do yourself a favor and get a good desk chair.

If money was no object, we would all be in a Herman Miller Aeron. But most of us can't justify dropping a grand on a chair, even though it's deductible for self-employed people. Perhaps the next best thing is a gaming chair. These are designed to look like as if they cost $ 1,000, but they often cost only a few hundred.

DXRacer is one of the most well-known brands of player-focused chairs thanks to endless YouTube sponsorship and eSports affiliations. These chairs all cost less than $ 400. They are also finished in PU (vegan) leather and include a lifetime warranty on the frame.

Unfortunately, the aesthetic of the gaming chair is not for everyone. Finding one that suits an "adult" office environment can be a challenge. Many players regret the disgusting detail and high brand, but swear by the comfort these chairs provide.

Maybe you can convince your boss on health grounds? If you work from home, the comfort may be worthy of the glorious design.

Fancy Gaming Mice

A SteelSeries Rival 500 gaming mouse.

Gaming mice have more accurate sensors than their usual counterparts to give competitive players an advantage with online gamers. They offer higher polling rates for smoother precision movements.

This gives some clear advantages, no matter what you use a mouse for. Even if you just surf the web, a more accurate mouse is nicer to use. For tasks like photo editing, a more accurate mouse can make life much easier.

Game mice are often covered in additional wheels and buttons. While these may be a bit daunting at first, it is the productivity hack that can help you do more in less time. These mice are often accompanied by custom software that allows you to customize each button.

This means that you can set dedicated shortcuts on the mouse, such as cut, copy and paste. You can use one button to start your e-mail client, and another to lock your computer. The buttons on the side of the mouse can go back or forward in the browser. The less often you need to move your hands from one peripheral to another, the less time you waste.

Warning with gaming mice is the same as chairs and keyboards: they often have an over-the-top player designed. Expect to find programmable RGB lighting and disgusting branded products that don't fit into more professional offices.

Solid State Drives

  A Samsung 860 EVO SSD.

Solid-state drives (SSDs) arenas It is marketed only to players, but you will not see many from most hardware manufacturers that produce workstations for home and office use. For example, Apple was one of the first companies to go all-in on SSDs in MacBooks, but it doesn't include one in the base iMac model.

Traditional hard drives (HDD) store data on metal plates. A mechanical arm moves across the plate to read different parts of the disk, which can be a time-consuming process. Due to reliance on moving parts, hard drives are also prone to spontaneous (and not so spontaneous) failure. They are notoriously slow and susceptible to physical injury.

SSDs completely remove moving parts, resulting in much faster read and write speeds. The units are less likely to fail as there are no moving parts. Any process that relies on data collection (such as launching an application) or creating new data (such as copying files) receives a significant increase in speed.

This has made SSDs one of the best upgrades you can do on any computer. Almost all aspects of general use are improved by switching to an SSD. It's also pretty easy to do – you just switch one storage device to another.

You don't even have to store everything on an SSD. By installing your operating system and the most commonly used applications on an SSD, you will see a jump in performance, even if you continue to store personal files and other information on a traditional hard drive.

High-End PC Hardware [19659054] An ASUS ROG RTX 2070 Super CPU. The most important part of a game set is the computer. Chairs, keyboards and advanced displays are useless if the machine that drives everything is not up to scratch. if you don't need the latest, best hardware, it pays to know where to spend your money to get the best performance for your money.

For a gaming computer, you want a powerful CPU and a GPU (graphics card) that can handle your desired level of visual fidelity and resolution. If you want to run the latest games on Ultra Settings in 4K, you will spend more than $ 1,000 on a GPU.

But acceptable results are very achievable on a much more modest budget. The Ryzen family of CPUs are offers excellent performance at a price that gives Intel a run for its money. Similarly, you can play most modern Full HD games with respectable quality settings if you spend about $ 400 on a graphics card (even a used game that is a year or two old) Throw in a decent amount of RAM and an SSD, then you fly!

All that power won't go to waste when you don't play games either. With a decent CPU and enough RAM you can easily browse through 100 open tabs. Resource-intensive web pages and spreadsheets with thousands of cells will not stop your machine

Editing built-in 4K video is possible with a sufficiently powerful GPU. Data such as RAW image editing can cause Photoshop to suffocate if you do not have a special GPU. Other processes, such as running virtual machines, data analysis, compiling from source code, video transcoding or even using your machine as a temporary server, would all benefit from hardware that is better than average.

Beware of inflated prices

If there is one thing that the manufacturers have realized is that practically everything can be transformed into a "gaming product" with the right brand. Often this is just a problem to get more money.

However, advanced products that focus on power and precision offer a superior computing experience. So give these "gamer" products a look, even if you don't play or like the aesthetics.
