You already know about the huge and lively market for, and even used sports equipment. But you may be shocked (or at least amused) to discover some of the other gems that people praise on eBay, Craigslist and the Facebook Marketplace.
We trawled through these popular online marketplaces and looked for the unexpected things that people are willing to pay real money – sometimes lots of it – to get their hands on. And if you have spent a lot of yoursout your closets, cabinets, attic and garage, who knows? The seller of these less obvious items may very well be you. (If you have a more charitable spirit, various non-profit organizations have appeared to collect and cycle some of these items, and we link to them as well.)
Read on to find out how much these seven surprising hot ticket items are worth when you sell them online. You may also want to review our guides on how to do thisand how to do . Just stay away from .
Sell Legos by the set or by the pound
The more effort you put into sorting your Lego bricks, the more cash you will be able to get them out. If you have complete sets, good! They usually sell for the most money – bonus if they are still in an unopened box. If you do not have all the pieces (or the time it takes to find out if you do), you can list your Legos for a premium if you sort by color or type of block.
If you’d rather just sell that 55-gallon storage bin full of various Lego parts as quickly and easily as possible, unsorted Legos will cost around $ 5 to $ 10 a pound on eBay.
You can tooto Lego Replay, a program that benefits children’s nonprofits.
2. Disney movies on VHS are a goldmine
First to dispel the myth: No, you probably will not get thousands of dollars for your old Disney VHS collection. As an urban legend-debunking site, Snopes points out, even though you may be watching a lot of old Disney movies listed For absurd amounts of money (like this copy of Beauty and the Beast sold on eBay for $ 1.28 million), these lists almost never have any actual bids. A quick search for “Disney VHS” tapes that have sold out is even more telling, revealing selling prices anywhere from a dollar to $ 20 or so.
That said, up to $ 20 (and in some cases even more) for your old Disney VHS tapes is not bad for a format that is almost as old as Star Wars.
3. Remote control, no TV included
Althoughcan be found on cheap (like this ), they are not always a good replacement for the remote control that came with your TV. Therefore, there is a lively used market for old remote controls for TVs, stereos and other components.
If you have some old clickers lying around a TV, stereo receiver, VCR, DVD player or cable box that you no longer need, you may be able to get anywhere from $ 20 to $ 20 each, including shipping, which you can also charge for.
4. Turn your old car into cash flow
If you have an old car that cannot be repaired, you can sell it to a local garbage dump, but you would be lucky to get more than a few hundred dollars for your clunker. If you have a basic understanding of car parts and the tools needed to remove them (plus the space to store an extinguished motor vehicle) it will be much more profitable to sell your car in part.
This requires some mechanical knowledge and expertise, but if you have the skills and space, it is definitely worth the effort. A car that you can get $ 200 or $ 300 for from a garbage can can turn into $ 2,000 to $ 3,000 if it is separated.
There are also lots of charities that are happy to take your old car out of your hands. In exchange, you may write off the value of the vehicle as a tax deduction. But be careful: A CNBC investigation revealed that many of the supposed nonprofits that accept used donations from used cars are not up-and-coming.
5. Resell your old prescription glasses
The way many eye insurance plans are drawn up, many people change their prescription glasses every two years (often by). But even if your old frames may be a little worn, unless they are so damaged that they are unusable, you can still probably get a decent return on selling them.
How much you get depends on whether they are in good shape and whether they are a hot brand (Ray-Ban, Coach), but even $ 20 is a bonus if your only other option was to leave them in a box somewhere.
There are also charities that are happy to redirect your used glasses to a visually impaired person in need. If you would rather donate your glasses, you can do so at New Eyes, OneSight or Eyes of Hope.
Collect and sell used golf balls
There is so much money to be made in the $ 200 million per year golf ball market that some people even do a full time job of it. The biggest payday is for certified divers who dive deep into water hazards that collect wild balls.
But if you happen to have enough golfing habits (or live in a neighborhood or apartment complex built on top of an old driveway or golf course where golf balls appear like dandelions), it is valued anywhere from a few cents to a dollar, even just a few buckets that are worth can cover your next green fee. Obviously, the better condition they are in the more they are worth, and the more premium the brand is – so Titleist balls are worth more than, say, Srixon.
You can sell used golf balls to LostGolfBalls.com or directly to consumers on eBay.
7. Turn used crayons into cash
Broken, used crayons still have a lot of life left in them. You can melt them into new crayons or use them to color homemade play putty (think Play-Doh), not to mention using them to make a number of crafts such as candles, ornaments and fixtures. Or you can sell them to people who want to do it. Used crayons fetch anywhere from $ 3 to $ 5 per pound on eBay and even more on Etsy. As with other items, crayons with name tags (Crayola) are worth more than generics, and you can charge more if you sort by color.
There are also several crayons that collect crayons that reuse used crayons for new ones for children at risk, children’s hospitals and the like. If you’d rather get paid with good vibes, check out The Crayon Initiative, Crazy Crayons and Crayon Collection.
