We have covered LEGO ideas before: It is a system that allows independent LEGO creators to submit their designs for LEGO and fans to vote. If a design receives more than 10,000 votes, LEGO will consider making it a retail set. The latest creation to meet that threshold is Bag End, Bilbo’s idyllic Shire home from Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
The set is designed by “saabfan” and it is wonderful. It uses a base designed to look like an open copy of the book, complete with Tolkien’s quote in the corner. Bilbo’s home contains iconic elements from the books and films, which you can inspect thanks to a removable roof. The rooms have kitchen, pantry, living room with fireplace, bedroom, laundry room. Both the outside and the interior are overflowing with small organic details.
Doing just 10,000 votes does not guarantee that a set will be chosen by LEGO. But the company has a strong relationship with Warner Bros., which already collaborates on both LEGO devices and video games based on Lord of the Rings (among many others). If you are impatient for the 1-to-2-year process of getting a set from Ideas to Store Shelves, you can check out an animated 3D version of LEGO Bag End here.
