To add a group of FaceTime calls to iOS 12

Group FaceTime calls were once something crazy Apple fans just dreamed about. Apple originally delayed the release of the feature, but from iOS 12.1 you can call group calls up to 32 people and yes, you can chat with Memoji ].

The function also works with MacOS from MacOS 10.14.1, which was released with iOS 12.1.

Compatibility

Group FaceTime will work with almost all iOS devices that have iOS 12 installed, but how it works depends on your device. Older iOS devices will connect to Group FaceTime calls, albeit audio only.

The devices that can participate in a video conference call include iPhone 6S or later, iPad Pro or later, iPad Air 2 and later, and iPad Mini 4 . Again, older iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices can still connect to a Group FaceTime call, but they will only get the audio part of the call.

Call a call by opening the FaceTime app on your iOS device and tapping the + sign in the upper right corner. Search for contact names and add who you want to call, and then press the green audio or video button at the bottom.

Using the App Messages

It was always possible to call someone via FaceTime in the Messages app, but only in individual conversation threads. Now, group message threads can get the opportunity to call everyone in the group conversation. But instead of automatically calling everyone, FaceTime sends a message to the group, which includes a button to participate in the call. How it works:

  • In a group conversation thread, tap the section at the top of the screen with contact names and photos.
  • A drop-down menu presents you with three options: Audio, FaceTime and Info. Press FaceTime .
  • A FaceTime group call is then opened on your device, with placeholder pictures for each person in the group chat.

In the message group itself, other participants will see a message that lets them know that a FaceTime call has been started, with a button to participate in the call. The message also contains the number of people who are active in the call. If someone needs to leave the call, the button to go on will remain active as long as the call is active.

Memoji

At any time during a call, you can switch to one of Apple's premade Animoji or you can use one of your personally created Memoji by pressing the button with a star on it. There you can choose from different filters, add text or select an animated character.
