Apple has a built-in photo widget that displays random photos from your photo library. But if you have 20,000 photos in your iCloud photos, it will not be so useful. It is better to create a custom widget to display only a certain image or a couple of your favorite photos.

This can be done quite easily with the free Widgetsmith app.

How to create a custom photo widget with widgetsmith

With Widgetsmith, you can create and customize widgets based on templates. You can either use a photo or an album (which the widget will scroll through).

After downloading the Widgetsmith app, first open the app and navigate to Settings> Permissions to grant Photos access permission.

Give pictures permission to Widgetsmith

Now when you go to the “Widgets” tab, you will see that Widgetsmith already has templates for small, medium and large widgets. To create a new widget, press the “Add (size) widget” button. Now select a widget that you want to edit.

Tap Add new widget or select a widget

Again, tap the widget preview from the center of the screen.

Tap the widget preview

Now, from the “Style” tab, scroll down to the Custom section. Here you see two options: Photo and Photo in album.

Select Photo or Photos in the album option

To add a single image, select the “Photo” option.

Press the “Selected photo” tab and select the “Select photo” option from here.

Press Select photo

Browse your library now and select a photo.

Select a photo from the library

After selecting the photo, press the “Back” button to return to the widget preview.

Go back to the widget page

To select an album, select the “Photo in album” option.

Then select an album that you want to display on your home screen from the “Selected album” section. Press the “Back” button to return to the widget preview screen.

Select the album, then go back

Here you can rename the widget if you want. Press the “Save” button to save the name. Then select the “Save” button again to save the widget.

Give the widget a name and select the Save button

Now that we’ve created the photo widget, it’s time to add it to your home screen.

Go to your iPhone’s home screen page where you want to add the widget and press and hold on the home screen until you enter edit mode on the home screen (where the icons start jiggling).

Now tap the “+” icon in the upper left corner of the screen.

Tap Plus from the iPhone home screen

Select the “Widgetsmith” app here.

Select Widgetsmith

Now change to the size of the widget you created above (small, medium or large) and press the “Add widget” button.

Tap Add widget

You will now see the Widgetsmith widget on your home screen, but it may not show photos. To edit the widget, just tap it while you are still in juggling mode.

Touch the widget after adding it

Select “Widget” in the menu.

Tap the Widget option

Here you switch to the widget we created in the section above.

Switch to the Photos widget

Now you see your photo (or photos) in the widget. You can move the widget anywhere on the Home screen. Now just swipe up from the home field, or press the home button to exit edit mode.
