Group iMessage conversations are great until you continue to be bombarded with messages and mentions. Even if you turn off an Apple Messages group, you will still receive notifications for mentions. To disable iMessage notifications on iPhone and iPad.
Starting with iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, Apple made some changes to how iMessage groups work. While you can turn off group conversations, the messaging app still sends messages when someone mentions you.
From the Settings app, you can disable notifications for all mentions.

Open the “Settings” app on your iPhone or iPad, then navigate to the “Messages” section.
Here, scroll down to the “Mention” section and press the switch next to the “Notify me” option. Make sure the setting is dimmed.
Now you will not be notified when someone mentions you in any iMessage groups.
To completely turn off an iMessage group, you must use the “Messaging” app.
Open an iMessage group conversation and tap the “Arrow” icon at the top of the conversation.
Now select the “Info” button.
From the conversation settings menu, swipe down and tap the switch next to the “Hide alerts” option.
You have now completely turned off an iMessage group chat. You will not receive any messages from the group chat, including mentions.
