Since it is neither practical nor easily possible to train service personnel from the US space force in real space, the Armed Forces needed to get creative. Now it is working with companies and funding partners to create the Slingshot Orbital Laboratory, a simulator that will provide interactive training opportunities while replicating real physics.
The US Space Force commissioned Slingshot Aerospace to create virtual reality sims, and they will be working with The Third Floor, a VFX space-themed Hollywood blockbuster film that Mandalorianen and Seriously.
The partners have so far received $ 2 million in funding, including $ 1million from ATX Venture Partners, and a $ 1 million contract from the US Space Force. The goal is to create a simulator that helps service members, and also students and professionals, gain an understanding of how spacecraft and other objects work in space, regardless of their level of education.
“Space operators need to understand complex concepts such as astrodynamics, the effects of various objects in orbit and how spacecraft maneuver among other subjects in space – all of which require more adaptable, interactive and tailored educational tools than we currently use,” said Colonel Max Lantz, commander , National Security Space Institute, United States Air Force in an earlier press release. “Building an immersive environment to gain a better understanding of these basic theories will be crucial to supporting space strength.”
