Answer: Pokémon Red / Green / Blue / Yellow
When it comes to video game sales, nothing helps a game's sales rank more than being bundled with a popular console. Tetris by default of being bundled with the Nintendo Game Boy for years, has enjoyed sales reaching 30 million units (and counting every platform Tetris has been sold on, it's sold over 170 million units). By the same token, Wii Sports bundled with the Nintendo Wii, has moved over 82 million units.
Outside of bundled sales, however, is where you really see what consumers love. Lots of people who wanted to Wii, for example, may have never bought Wii Sports with their own hard-earned money if it didn't come packaged with the Wii. So, do we strip away the bundled games, what do we find? We find ourselves with an award stage loaded with Nintendo hits.
The best selling unbundled game of all time is Pokémon Red / Green / Blue / Yellow with 47.52 million sales. Following behind is Wii Fit / Wii Fit Plus with 43.8 million sales, while New Super Mario Bros. gets the bronze at 30.8 million, for a Nintendo trifecta. Nintendo clearly did something with their delivery and marketing as their top 10 non-bundled games netted over 266 million sales.
