When will the IRS send a new stimulus check? Our best guess, and who can get it first

There is still a way to possibly approve a second stimulus control, either before or after November 3 election, and either through independent legislation or as part of a comprehensive financial relief package. But even if an agreement is reached, it still takes time for the payment to arrive people who qualify.

The IRS sent out the first incentive payment in waves according to predetermined priority groups, so a second incentive payment would probably be handled in the same way. We created a possible payment schedule that charts where you would end up in the picking order and when exactly yours second check for up to $ 1200 could come.

We update this story regularly as the timeline shifts.

Here are the dates the IRS can send the checks

When and if another stimulus check is approved, Finance Minister Steven Mnuchin has said it would take about a week to process the first payments. “I can get 50 million payments really fast. A lot of it in people’s direct accounts,” he said in August.

We have speculated about the potential dates based on the current situation in Washington, DC. Please note that not everyone will receive a payment at the same time. First still waiting for their checks or even for collection payments. This creates a de facto order of priority that can lead to some Americans getting their checks days or even weeks before others. We expect the IRS to adopt roughly the same system for sending out a second stimulus control in 2020 as it did with the first stimulus control, which was approved in March.

Direct deposit is fastest: People who already have theirs direct deposit information registered with the IRS or who provides that information when and if registration reopens should be first in line to get a stimulus check. An electronic transfer of funds is faster and more efficient, which is why this group largely received its first payment faster.

Social insurance recipients: With the first incentive payment, many Social Security recipients who had direct deposit information with the federal government received checks during the first week, but not always the first day.

People getting paper checks: The IRS began sending checks to them about a week later without immediate details.

EIP card receiver: Economic impact Payment card are prepaid visa cards that the IRS sent to about 4 million people beginning in mid-May. If the tax authority follows the same payment priority order, this group can start seeing their checks weeks after the first direct transfers have expired.

The last group: People who received checks after June are still waiting to receive their incentive payment or did not know they need to complete an extra step. Direct payments will continue until the end of 2020 for certain individuals who were not included in the previous groups. What is the longest you may have to wait for your check?

Although we expect most people to get their money sooner, it can still take months for the IRS to send all checks if the first round is an indication. Six months after the first incentive payments expired, the federal agency is still trying track millions of people which may be money owed.

And even with the experience of processing about 160 million payments in the IRS’s back pocket, some people would probably need to clear some barriers to get their money. Here are common roadblocks that held up the first stimulus check.
